PSY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Dependent And Independent Variables, Critical Thinking, Institutional Review Board
Document Summary
Universities screen research proposals through an ethics committee (institutional. Only about 5% of apa members we use animals in their research. 95% of the animals used are rats, mice, rabbits, or birds. Empirical questions- questions that can be answered by making objective observations. Skepticism- an explanation for behavior is accepted only after other possible explanations have been ruled out. Critical thinking- thinking that examines assumptions, discerns hidden values, evaluates evidence and assesses observations. Idea: theories- series of statements about relationships b/w variables that, taken together, attempts to explain some natural phenomenon, personal experiences, daily observations, so(cid:373)eo(cid:374)e else"s (cid:449)ork. Case studies: a single person, a rare case event or an event that clearly exemplifies a phenomenon is studied in detail. Insights gained through a case study may also lead to the development of hypothesis that can be tested using other methods. Important: investigator manipulates the factors of interest, whole holding constant other factors.
