Poem is about odysseus, but it ignores him for four months (he appears in book 5) Biggest chunk of the poem takes place in ithaca. Born before odysseus left for troy (he is probably about 20 years old) Lacks self-confidence and acts a lot younger than he is. It is important when he stands up to the suitors, and even is rude to his mother: athena tries to give telemachus a little more backbone. Song also warns that it is dangerous to offend the gods: suitors do not get the message.
