10/18 the hellenistic period and the maccabean revolt and state: alexander and the arrival of the greeks to the east, they arrive in 333 bce, replaced by the romans in 63 bce. They leave in 640: the maccabean kingdom. The maccabees are very culturally important: alexander conquered the persian empire, crossed asia minor, took israel and egypt, then the whole of persia, hellenistic kingdoms. After he died, the territory was split between his generals: need to know seleucid kingdom, syria, iraq, southern turkey, israel/palestine, ptolemaic kingdom, egypt. There is lots of immigration (greeks and locals: the urban aspect. They had gymnasiums (cultural center, classes about greek culture, as well as work outs) , bouleh (city council) Everyone spoke greek: the religious aspect - syncretism. Syncretism the fusion of old middle eastern gods with greek gods: the cultural aspect. Language koineh is the greek language blended with a local vernacular.
