NURS 245 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Heparin, B Cell, Monocyte
Document Summary
Edema can occur almost anywhere, the occurrence varies. Starvation; lack of nutrients to form albumin. For example, if there is a lack of nutrients, treat. Edema - increase in interstitial fluid (icf): can be locally or with albumin supplements distributed throughout the body: it is essentially the collection of fluid. Disfigurement and limitation of movement (pitting edema) Increased distance for diffusion which makes it more difficult for the transportation of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and wastes. There is a small amount of icf in lungs, therefore if there is an increase in fluid in the lungs (i. e. , pulmonary edema), it causes an increase in distance for o2 diffusion, which is life threatening. Pulmonary edema is the most severe because the patient could die very quickly. Promotes the production of urine; forces water out of the body. Hernia - a bulging of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening. Elephantitis - worms live in the lymphatics causing edema.
