Security = ability to defer & defeat threats of violence from other states. To pose a security threat, state must have . Security threats only active when threat of force is made linked to demand. International rivalries : occur when two states identify each other as major security threat hostile intentions give state reason to fear rival. Ideological (ex: us capitalism vs. ussr communism) Territorial (ex: india vs. pakistan over kashmir) More militarized disputes (threat or actual use) As rival a security, rival b security if rival b security, both rivals worse off (economically & in terms of security) Capability of defending vs. threats if carried out. Alliance : support in war from other states, military agreement.
