Document Summary

Milder interpretation: thoughts and behavior are in uenced by language. Indicates that there may be universal, physiological based principles behind color naming. Kay & kempton: used triads of colors, two items were clear examples of blue/green, third was a middle color, subjects had to decide which two went together, gave task to english speakers and tarahumara speaking subjects (mexican- Indian language) to make decision: tarahumara: no color distinction/no labels blue or green, made their judgements based on physical similarly (wavelengths). Didn"t show categorical perception: english speakers were affected by color labels (bluish-green, greenish- blue). Showed categorical perception, made the color either blue or green: supports idea of linguistic relativity. Winawer: given 6 squares of different shades of blue, english speakers: categorize all squares as blue, russian speakers have different labels for the squares. If passage was read in chinese, greater impact of the stereotype was present.
