Intelligence is: multidimensional, composed of many, separate mental abilities, multi-directional, characterized by inter-individual variation. Patterns of change differ across individuals: characterized by intra-individual plasticity (openness to change) capacity for change and improvement is always there. Typical changes over time: crystalized improves or stabilizes with age, fluid starts to decline in late 20s or early 30s. 1: used for much of early work. Consider: changes in education, changes in work and technology, changes in health, longitudinal studies are preferred. Example of longitudinal format: the seattle longitudinal study. Great individual differences between people in the changing nature of intellectual performance. Individual differences: 45-60% maintain stable level well into their 70s, 10-15% show increases until their mid 70s, roughly 30% decline by the time they reach their 60s.
