Document Summary

Foundation for science of genetics established in 1866 when it became more accepted. 5000 years ago people applied genetics but did not know: breeding plants and animals to have characteristics that they were interested in, manipulating genetics but they didn"t know they were. Gregor mendel is the father of genetics. He used pea plants to study inheritance. He crossed 24,000 plants in his life. He worked out the basic laws of inheritance in plants. His theory was completely ignored until many years later. He selected a variety of pea plants that have heritable characters with well defined traits. A character is an observable feature (phenotype) A trait is the form of the character. He initially has to use true-breeding peas. True breeding: through many generations of breeding, the individual has a constant trait that results. First filial generation = f1 (happens from crossing parent generation) Subsequent generation = f2 (results from selfing generation [f1 with f1])
