Zhao mengfu, mounted official, 1296: reflection upon the decisions people made about their loyalty in government service. Zhao mengfu, sheep and goat, c. 1300-5: seen has two han dynasty generals, soft, diluted scratchy ink, sheep is the one that refuses to serve. Study in ancient models: highly self-conscious reference to the past, zhao mengfu, mind landscape of xie youyu, after 1286. Inspired by the nymph of the lao river: an official who served in the court who was asked to compare himself to another official. Selected place has southern chinese looking landscape; low marshes: quality reminiscent of dong yuan, moment where southern landscape style becomes popular again, primitive, awkward, blandness. Landscape as a deliberate form of archaism: reductive form of line on the mountains, dental striation in the grass and trees, zhao mengfu, water village 1302, a kind of composition as a level distance composition. Flat, low lying type of landscape: zhao mengfu, elegant rocks and sparse trees, yuan dynasty.
