BIOLOGY 152 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Sympatric Speciation, Allopatric Speciation, Apple Maggot
Document Summary
Allopatric = a population is sub-divided into two or more geographically separated parts (there is a barrier) Sympatric = a population is genetically subdivided, even though it is not geographically subdivided: ecological partition: apple maggot fly. Flies have access and feed on/lay eggs on both hawthorne fruits and apples. The apples and hawthorne bear fruits at different times, so flies hatch on them at different times. Hatch time has a genetic component and is inherited. When the flies hatch, they imprint on their homes (the apple or hawthorne) Therefore, the flies are going to separate orchards in addition to being selected by their hatch time: the flies become genetically isolated: chromosomal mutation (polyploidy): anemone flowers new species. The pollen of the parent and the young cannot pollinate each other because their genes are entirely different. Every new generation creates a new species this is extremely fast.
