In pre-planning and producing the set for a lm (referred to as the art direction or set design) we can break down set design/art direction into 2 categorical styles: realism/expressionism! But using location at a speci c time of day for affects, dressing up the realistic location ! to make it even more aesthetically pleasing! Lawrence of arabia (director uses a real place, the dessert, and makes it look really ! beautiful), midnight in paris! Using minimal/no manipulation of the set, creating a sparse or haphazard look! Realism in art direction tries to convince us of the realism of the setting (actual or studio) whether this be drama, science ction, horror, or epic!
