COMM 493L Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Marlon Riggs, Tongues Untied, Mockumentary
Document Summary
Riggs, a gay african american film and video maker, produced tongues untied showcased nationally on pbs. It was not received well in a number of communities and even the united states congress had negative words to say about it. Namely, due to its frank and graphic treatment of homosexual identity and culture. Riggs uses elements of performativity, reenactment, song, dance, and poetry to reveal the lived experiences of gay black american men. Suggests more of a careless or soft thoughts. Heightened the intensity of the message at hand. Seems like he"s given up, like its an echo in his mind. Strengthens = constant words are like beating into his mind. Riggs uses racial and sexual slurs as a means of empowerment, by way of claiming these words for himself and for his own use in his film. Sounded more like a spoken word than anything.
