Individual must learn to become a good person. Learn to be courageous by doing courageous things, learn to be just by doing just things. Choice takes place in the background of habits, desires, inhibitions, satisfactions. Character traits are a collection of habits and desires of mind and body. Aristotle: virtues are objective in sense justifiable but do not derive merely from local traditions but rather from features of humanness that lie beneath. Developmental process, standards for our behavior are formed in early childhood. Taught to us by family, friends, peers, teachers through emotions and attachments. The emotions are all in place by elementary school. At the heart of the character is the self. We learn who we are from the stories that we tell and others tell about us. The self is the in charge of the images. Age between 18 and 30 is time of maturity. Decline in neuroticism, increases in helpfulness, conscientiousness, agreeableness.
