In a populaion of cooperators, a few people can adopt an exploiive strategy (or all of us some of the ime) so we react with anger at being mistreated. But, people make mistakes and so if we never got over conlicts, or mistrusted people ater only one instances of mistreatment, we"d have not many friends and allies. An adapive strategy is to be trusing, to get angry if mistreated, but then be willing to forgive. Conlict can create strong emoions (anger, hate, fear, worry) This doesn"t mean just go with our emoions. How we express, cope with, and regulate our emoions is important. Work by gotman has examined marriages over very long ime spans (beginning in 1983) Brings couples in to the lab and videotape them discussing a topic about which they had recently argued. Analyzes these video-tapes for paricular forms of posiive and negaive emoions and interacion styles.
