Ethics the moral choices individuals make in their relationships with others play a crucial role in the process. Communication ethics involve the standard of right and wrong in the messages that we choose to send. Basics of ethical communicaiton: truthfulness, sharing or withholding information, benefit and harm of messages, absolutism/relativism. Communicaiton is competent when it is effective and appropriate for a given situation and when the communicators evaluate and reassess their own communication process. This is one of the most important reasons you are here in class. We have a process oriented approach to communication to help us achieve our goals. We must recognize the other person in the communication is also trying to achieve their goal. Mutual benefit each of you has something to get out of the interaction and through effective communication you will get there. Appropriate behavior isn"t always obvious and is impacted by society and cultural norms. Successful communicators have the flexibility to adapt their behaviors.
