ICE
Limits secondary injury and neural inhibition
Many cells on the periphery of the primary injury suffer metabolic injury b/c of
inadequate blood and oxygen
Ice decrease the metabolic need
Less metabolic injury means less total injury, less protein generated by phagocytes and
edema
Damaged cell release chemicals that attack the tissue and uninjured cells in thje vicintiy,
causing secondary enzymatic activity
Decreased secondary metabolic injury means there are fewer damaged cells to release
these chemicals
REST
Limits injury aggravation
Limits the pain-spasm- pain cycle
Limits neural inhibition
Pain becomes ghuide for therepeutic modality and therapeutic exercise application
Too little activity results in:
Delayed healing
Adhesions
Muscular atrophy
Loss of conditioning
Skills become rusty
Loss of confidence
RICE is nice; but, REST is best! Resume exercise sub threshold
Elevation
Decreases capillary hydrostatic pressur and helps to control edema
Most effective when used in conjuction with compression

Document Summary

Many cells on the periphery of the primary injury suffer metabolic injury b/c of inadequate blood and oxygen. Less metabolic injury means less total injury, less protein generated by phagocytes and edema. Damaged cell release chemicals that attack the tissue and uninjured cells in thje vicintiy, causing secondary enzymatic activity. Decreased secondary metabolic injury means there are fewer damaged cells to release these chemicals. Pain becomes ghuide for therepeutic modality and therapeutic exercise application. Decreases capillary hydrostatic pressur and helps to control edema. Most effective when used in conjuction with compression. Increase pressure outside the capillaries decreaing capillary filtraton pressure and helping to control edema. Most effective when administered within minutes of injury. Too much, too often, too soon, too little rest. After detailes history, adress training error, change loading pattern. Internal factors: malalignment, muscle strength, joint mobility, age, weight, height etc . External factors: improper training, equipment, weather, surface, etc . Stretch rehabilitation, exercise, practice, competition ice 20 minutes.
