Gas: unfixed volume and shape; conforms to shape of container, filling entire container. Element: substance consisting of one unique kind of atom. Compound: substance consisting of two or more different type of elements chemically bound together. Mixture: two or more substances physically intermingled; can be separated. Heterogeneous mixture: not uniform, visible boundaries between components. Homogeneous mixture: uniform, no visible boundaries between components. Figure 1. 5: properties of matter: a characteristic that gives a substance its unique identity. Physical properties: a property that a substance shows by itself without changing into or interacting with another substance.
