PSY 3511 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Active Listening
Document Summary
You can show that you are attending to your clients by expressing open body language, nodding, using eye contact, and repeating back what they said to show that you are paying attention. Active listening responses show that you are attending to your client and include reflection of feeling, where you respond back but reference back to their emotion, close- ended questions, open-ended questions, and summarizing. Interpretation: giving the client a reason or explanation for their concerns; a hypothesis, used sparingly, and using tentative language. They might think you are putting words in their mouth. You could be wrong and/or persuading them to believe something that may not be true. Sharing information about yourself, as a therapist, to aid the client. It is about the client, not about yourself. You as the counselor are commenting on something in the immediate surroundings.
