Baldwin american novelist/playwright, black & gay, grew up in harlem, born in 1924, lived in southern france (paris, new york, and istanbul moved back and forth between 3 for a decade) 1953 first novel a/b growing up in harlem published, he wrote about taboo (1950"s) subjects like gay relationships, etc. Returns to the us in the 1960"s to lend his voice to the civil rights movement (cid:1)
