Chinese manufactured good was important to westerns, especially tea. Dominant player was brit-east india company but they needed to sell something in order to get the tea. They sold them opium (drug) and opium addiction spread around china and cause a bunch of problems. Daoguang emperor tried to restrict opium trade and cut off the british. Brit refused to take no for an answer and war broke out. Brit technology was way more advance than chinese. 1842: chinese need to make peace and asked for negotiation. Pay reparation for all of the opium they confiscated, pay off all the debt of the merchants, pay for cost of war. Brit subjects in china is governed by british law (extraterrotirality- law applied beyond land) Canton system is torn open and 4 additional points are opened up to brit alonng east coast. Guy rejected from government job who made everyone think he was jesus brother. Established controlled over some land (taiping heavenly kingdoom)
