MCRO 251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Gattaca, Secondary Metabolite, Primary Metabolite
Document Summary
After class review the information we talked about in class. If it is not on the outline, then it is not on the test. If you are assigned a figure, everything associated with the figure is testable. Generation (doubling time): the time it takes for a cell to divide. Organisms in biofilm are more resistant to disinfectants and antibiotics. Symbiotic relationship - require others to be there. Same shape, size, color are usually the same bacteria. Log or exponential phase: where it is growing and dividing as rapidly as it can, when antibiotics are most effective. Primary metabolite: (nucleic acid, enzymes, rna, peptidoglycan, ribosomes) something that is required for growth. Stationary phase: stop dividing, no nutrition left, bacteria growing = bacteria dying, trying to survive. Secondary metabolite: necessary for surviving (endospores, antibiotics) biological warfare, when bacteria or fungi make antibiotics. Death phase: no growth, dying in mass, dies exponentially.
