ANTH 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Arthur Keith, Cranial Vault, Richard Leakey
Document Summary
Early homo- earliest members of homo divided into two species. Homo habilis: datong from about 2. 3 mya, an early species belonging to our genus, Homo, with cranial capacities averaging about 63-640 cc, about 50% the brain capacity of moderns and reduced molars and premolars, relatively long arms and powerful hand. Homo rudolfensis: early species belonging to our genus homo. Homo habilis that some paleoanthropologists make no distinction between the two. More thickly enameled molars, flatter face, larger brain, more modern limb proportions. Both are known primarily from the western parts of kenya and tanzania but remains also found at the omo basin (ethiopia) ad sterkfontein (south africa) Contemporaneous with paranthropous boisei, and possibly later with homo erectus. Homo habilis appears to be the earlier of the two species dating back to 2. 3 mya. Larger brain than australopithecines (630-40 cc) but smaller postcranially to australopithecines. Early homo: homo habilis- the naming of the find.
