Measurement: the determination of the frequency of criminal behavior and of the characteristics of offenders and victims. Difficult because crime often remains hidden from the police. Measuring crime: uniform crime reports (ucr): the fbi"s compilation of crime statistics known to the police. Cleared by arrest= anyone is arrested for the crime, the case is closed for another reason (death of prime suspect). Unlike tv in this aspect: critique of ucr data, underestimation of the amount of crime, diversion of attention from white-collar crime with main focus on part i crimes, misleading data on the characteristics of arrestees.
