Cultural Appropriation
Cultural appropriation is when you mimic elements of a certain culture, especially
marginalized communities, without facing the repercussion of violence towards the
community.
-the fetishizing of those cultures creates a form of oppression even if you have an
understanding of that culture.
>those who appropriate profit off of the culture while those who are in the
culture are facing violence.
-that aspect of a marginalized culture is then fetishized by a culture
and it becomes accepted by white people and even praised but when the culture
itself does it, it’s deemed too ethnic.
-inherent unequal power dynamic
-performance is what best explains the appropriation of a black culture
-not only exploitation, but also sharing, theft, exchange, and cannibalism all
intertwined.
-no original element to culture, at different times and in different generations, there
are different aspects of culture being shown and used.
