BIOL 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Linnean Society Of London, Selective Breeding, Natural Selection
Document Summary
Transmutation: transmutation is an altercation of one species into another, immutability of species was questioned before darwin, the environment causes change in form. Cuvier: he attacked lamarck"s theory of evolution, parts of organisms too closely correlated to change, no evidence of gradual change in fossil record, ancient egyptian drawings of animals and mummies of animals look the same as now. Darwin: hms beagle voyage (1831-1836, collected fossils, observed biological/geographical features, perceived adaptation and origin of species as closely related. 1838- turns natural selection (ns) into a fully formed theory. 1844- wrote an essay about ns and sent it to his friends. 1851- finally published his work on ns and received tremendous backlash. Wallace: explored american and se asia (1848-1862) 1858- joint paper presented to linnaean society meeting. Darwin and wallace: decent from transmutation, diversification from common ancestor, gradualism. August 25, 2016: ns as mechanism for change.
