Early renaissance: burgundian era: 1400 - c. 1480. 1396-1467: chapel (chapelle, kapelle, musicians hired by a court. Guillaume du fay (dufay: c. 1397 - 1474, he was the illegitimate child of an unknown priest and a woman named marie du fayt. He was by far the most famous and influential composer of the 15th century, and his music was copied, distributed, and sung everywhere that polyphony had taken root. Almost all composers of the succeeding generations absorbed some elements of his style. The wide distribution of his music is all the more impressive considering published music was not invented yet: gloria ad modum tubae. Famous setting of the gloria done by du fay: great example of, canonic imitation, hocket, written for two sopranos and two trumpets, rondeau: ce moys de may.
