Self-terminating search: the time to respond would reflect the position of the probe within the memory set. Time to respond was correlated with the size of the memory set, not the location of the probe within that set. Derosa and tkacz (1976: used sets of ordered, sequential pictures as stimuli. Participants were shown a subset of images: ordered sets, random sets. Participants were then shown a probe and had to decide if that picture was part of the memory set or not. Short term memory and working memory are often synonymous.
