SOC 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Social Change, New Social Movements, Proletariat
Document Summary
Urbanization has brought people together both in body and in spirit. As society has become increasingly urban, it has also become increasingly diverse. Many social movements arose in the last 200 years as societies became more democratic. It"s hard to get people to change: what we like, what we believe. Great effort is needed to change people"s attitudes: child rearing, politics, music, many others. Social change can occur over a wide range of societies: within small communities, across multiple cities in multiple countries. Thoughts on social change focused on the shift from capitalism to communism. Marx believed the proletariat would revolt against the industrialist bourgeoisie: communism: Marx"s transition form of government was socialism: socialism economic system where the government manages the economy in the interest of the workers, owning the means of producing wealth to redistribute among the population. Less prevalent in contemporary government: too rigid for fast pace of modern business, socialist democracies.
