Document Summary

Structure and composition determine properties (mineral id) Color - how light interacts with a mineral, can be affected by trace amounts of different elements. Clarity - how well you can or can"t see through a mineral. Opaque - impervious to light (light does not penetrate it at all) Crystal form - external feature of mineral crystals. Occurs when growth is uninhabited by neighboring minerals. Luster - how light reflects from the surface of an object. Streak - the color that is characteristic of the mineral in powdered form. You get this by grinding the mineral into a porcelain plate. May not be the color of the specimen. Hematite occurs in many colors (black, steal, silver-grey, brown, red), but always has a reddish-brown streak. Diamond is 10 on the hardness scale. To test this, you see if the mineral can scratch something or if something scratches a mineral. If you can scratch it with your fingernail, it is less than 2. 5.
