Extrusive (earth"s surface-ava) or intrusive (in the earth-magma) Viscosity - measure of how easy it is for atoms to move around. More specifically, measure of resistance to flow. Syrup is more viscous than orange juice (it has more resistance to flow) Hot rocks have a lower viscosity (they flow easier) Rocks with higher water content have a lower viscosity. Easy for atoms to migrate (less viscous) if it stays hot. Harder for atoms to migrate if material cools very rapidly. Silicon-oxygen tetrahedron is the fundamental building block. In most of the minerals we talk about in this class. Minerals that have these are the most important mineral group: most rock-forming minerals. ***why we care: for a mineral to grow, it needs time to get organized. Textural cues: we can look at crystal size and infer where and how rocks formed. You wouldn"t expect these to have big crystals because magma cools really quickly.
