Targeting an entire population; aim to provide support and education before problems occur. We don"t do a great job at this - we usually just say all drugs are bad. Targeting families in need to alleviate identified problems, prevent escalation. Getting pertinent people involved - teachers, counselors, parents. Promoting healthy conventional groups and group actions. People who have a history of issues. In a lot of ways, you are already too late. Targets chemically dependent individuals (they need treatment) These three levels are often used in combination. In most settings where we implement prevention programming, you find all three types of drug users. Comprehensive programs for drug use and abuse. Harm reduction (not really practiced in the us, we treat it more as a cj issue) Pretty successful approach that is used in other places (netherlands, uk) Goal is to meet addicts on their own level. Addicts are encouraged to take part even if they aren"t ready to completely stop.
