Physical Activity: any bodily movement that results in energy expenditure (burning calories)
Exercise: a specific type of physical activity that is planned, repetitive, and done for a specific purpose
Physical Fitness: is a set of measurable physiological parameters
Kinesiology: the study of the mechanics of the body

Health-related fitness
(things that are thought to improve health and decrease risk for chronic diseases and injuries)
• Aerobic capacity/ stamina
o Aerobic exercise increases your endurance and cardiac health while anaerobic exercise will not
only help you burn fat but also help you gain lean muscle mass.
• Muscular strength/ endurance
• Flexibility
• Body composition
Skill-related fitness
(fitness parameters) (important for successful movement; may/ may not be related to health outcomes)
• Balance

*Purpose- Promote and protect health and prevent disease and disability in defines populations and
communities
• Focus on population health and prevention
• Shift over last 100 years
o From infectious disease (communicable- one person can transmit disease from one
person to another)
o To chronic disease (non-communicable- cannot be passed from one person to another;
cancer, obesity, diabetes)
Top causes of death used to be infectious disease and now they are more chronic diseases
