Relatively mild, anxiety related, no loss of touch with reality
A. Generalized Anxiety
1. Diffuse and persistence apprehension for at least 6 months
2. Nothing specific to pin anxiety on

B. Panic Disorders
1. Brief intense episodes of anxiety
2. Sometimes include anticipatory anxiety
a) When will next panic attack happen
3. Shortness of breath and feelings of unreality, disembodied, or out of
body experience
C. Phobic Disorders
1. Irrational fear of objects or situations that make life difficult
a) Being so afraid of people that you can’t take the bus to
work
2. 8- 10% of population effected
3. Origin is thought to be classical conditioning
a) Objects, things, people, etc become associated with
traumatic events
4. Treatments for Phobias
a) Systematic desensitization
(1) Train person to relax in presence of the stimulus
b) Implosion Therapy
(1) Confront the fear head on, but person is safe in
presence of phobic object so conditioned fear response
extinguishes
D. Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder
1. Anxiety, depression for at least 4 weeks after a traumatic response
III. SOMATOFORM DISORDERS
Anxiety focused on the body, physical ailment that leads to extreme anxiety or may
have extreme anxiety which causes them to have actual physical ailments
