Judge has ultimate power but is somewhat controlled today by determinate sentencing (3 strikes law, mandatory sentencing) Role of different actors in the court (use adversarial process: prosecution- work in favor for the state or victim, defense- work in favor of the criminal. Juries- determine guilt or innocence (beyond a reasonable doubt) Different types of courts: specialized courts, drug court, federal v. state, criminal v. civil.
