SOC 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Milgram Experiment, Rape Culture, Norm (Social)
Document Summary
Over 50 years ago, it was crime to share things with whites. Someone is depressed at the moment and go to therapist, and when others find out you"re seeing a therapist, they label you as a depressed person, which may shape your actions. Secondary deviance-subsequent acts of rule breaking that occur after primary deviance and as a result of your new deviant label and people"s expectations of you. A lot of the pressure that drives women to participate comes from the cultural norms of thinness. Deviance can shift from primary to secondary; start with a single act, then turn into your identity. Once it becomes a label (secondary deviance) two terms ensue: role engulfment, master status-your main identity; all others see is that you"re anorexic. Rape culture is not seen as deviant but becomes social norm and part of college life . Rape culture- set of values and beliefs that provide an environment conducive to rape.
