How is it related to a larger society. Religion is viewed as a major source of social solidarity. Religion defers happiness and rewards to the afterlife. Religion teaches a resigned acceptance of conditions in the earthly life. Defined religion in terms of a distinction between the sacred and the profane. Sacred- things that inspire awe, rituals can be created from this. Profane- things that are of the natural world, everyday, man made. Ceremonies and rituals are essential to unifying members. Functionalism view: religion works, can be boiled down to sacred and profane, shows shared norms, stable society. Weber: the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism (on final) Focus on influence of religion on social and economic life. Protestantism was the source of the capitalist outlook found in the modern west. Material success as a sign of divine favor. Belief that wealth should not be flaunted, led to capital accumulation.
