Document Summary

Culture - the collection of norms, behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, values, customs, language, institutions, etc. of a group of people. Rape culture - the collection of highly gendered norms, behaviors, attitudes, etc. that tolerate, condone, or celebrate sexual aggression. Involves a wide range of beliefs and behaviors. Women"s bodily and sexual autonomy is not routinely acknowledged and/or protected. Small behaviors add up to the tolerance or dismissal of sexual harassment. Partially explains high rates of sv, which will continue until society understands and chooses to eradicate these norms and their origins. Normative hetero scripts are not clearly distinct from some forms of sexual coercion and rape. They say rape doens"t happen a lot. They say that rape culture makes men look super bad. Not just committed by monsters (insane men) Not just motivated by sex, also motivated by power. Rape culture can exist and people can be held responsible for their actions.
