Unexpected: explain what will happen, explain all procedures, tell vital signs, listen to concerns and give honest responses, orient to the environment with tour. General pediatric unit- provide care for all ped specialties in one area. Short-stay, outpatient, ambulatory surgery- diagnostic tests, radiological tests. Isolation- can be scary for child as well as family. Toddler: explain right before procedure in simple concrete terms. Adolescent: clear complete explanations- oral or written. Physical preparation-npo, proper identification, void before surgery, monitor vs. Physical assessment- va, airway clearance, resp distress, monitor surgical site, monitor i&o.
