• Informed Consent
o Adequate disclosure
▪ What is goig to happe what ould happe what will happe if we do’t do it
▪ We are not allowed to talk about the specifics of the surgery. We are allowed to talk
about the general things that will happen for the surgery. We can't speak for the
surgeon. We only can answer questions that are in the scope of nursing practice.
▪ We then need to refer back to the surgeon
o Clear understanding and comprehension
o Give Consent voluntarily
▪ Families are really good at cohearsion and guilt tripping.
▪ Physicians need to go in and do a PARQ note
o PARQ note
▪ Record for
• What is happening in the procedure
• What are the alternatives of other surgeries or no doing the procedure
• The risk for the surgery
• Questions: have they answered all the patients questions?
▪ We need to make sure that all the questions are answered before we get informed
oset. We ay eed to all the surgeo ak. A sigature does’t ea ifored
consent.
▪ We cant obtain actual informed consent legally.
▪ PARQ note happens before we ask for final consent and signature
• Preparation of patient
o Surgical gown-check about underwear
▪ Depends on where the surgery is being conducted.
o Nail polish
▪ Dark and metallic nail polish is a no go. Most of the time we need to take off one nail.
▪ Do’t eed to take off aryli ails
▪ Need to pay attention to press on nails
o ID band/allergy
▪ Essential. They will be facility specific.
o Jewelry - rings
▪ It needs to come off. Especially necklaces and earrings
▪ We eed to ake sure they do’t get a eletrial burn
▪ Rigs do’t eed to ot eessarily oe off if it is't aroud the teperature.
▪ You need to make sure the rings is taped on with the stones tightly together
▪ Piercings must come out because of risk for burn
o Contacts/glasses, dentures, hearing aids
▪ We dont want the eyes scratched
▪ Make sure the glasses are labled if they really need them
▪ If you take out the dentures the shape of the face changes so we want to keep them
in unless they are an obstruction to the airway
▪ Hearing aids have to be sent with your patients. Bring with a cup so we can take them
out during surgery
o Void prior to OR
▪ Anesthia can make people incontent
o Preop Medication- Oral vs IV/IM
▪ Last thing we do. Especially if thee are any type of opiods or sedatives.
