Species living in close association with one another. Many but not all interactions are negative. Ex. barnacles on whales (unless too many) Requires complicated life cycles with multiple hosts. Protozoans - malaria, sleeping sickness, trichinosis, girardia. Involve partners specialized for obtaining energy and nutrients. Each partner supplies a limiting nutrient or energy source that the other cannot obtain alone. Bacteria in nitrogen fixing root nodule of plant roots. Cellulose digesting bacteria in rumen of cows. Fungus grows structures fed upon by ants. Fungus benefits -- nutrients in pulp supplied by ants. Ants benefit -- nutrients in fungal structures. Involve species that receive food or shelter from partners in return for defensive function. Protection for partner against predators, herbivores, or parasites. Cleaner fish and cleaner shrimp eat parasites off of defender. Feed on plant sap and produce sugar rich excretia honeydew . Involve animals that receive rewards for transporting propagules. Transport pollen in return for food rewards (nectar)
