COM 421 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Interpersonal Communication, Collectivism, Pragmatics
Document Summary
Pragmatics of human communication - watzlawick, beaver, jackson. All behavior counts as communication as long as someone is there to interpret it. Communication occurs with shared understanding (use of words) What if they had something in their eyes. What dimensions do cultures differ and how are they similar. Individual achievement and education vs groups (families, communities, friendships) Individualist culture: teaches members the importance of individual values (power, achievement, hedonism, stimulation). Collectivist culture: teaches members the importance of group values (benevolence, tradition, conformity, social norms). Much of the information is in the context or in the person. Information known by all, yet never explicitly stated. Place emphasis on the preservation of one"s reputation, credibility, or dignity. More likely to avoid an argument for fear of others losing face. Place emphasis on verbalized, explicit information (written contracts for example) Likely to use argument to make a point. Stage = marked by qualitatively different pattern of activities or behaviors.
