Document Summary
Chapter 1: intro to data analysis, intro to statistics. Know why we do data analysis in psychology (and other fields). Be familiar with the two main forms of data analysis (qualitative and quantitative). Be familiar with some important stats definitions. A way to make sense of information. Theory ->question -> collect data-> analyze data-> draw conclusions. There are two main types of information: A set of mathematical procedures for organizing, summarizing, and interpreting inform1tion(cid:818) (cid:806)gr1(cid:404)etter & w1lln1u, p(cid:732)(cid:807). (cid:818)three p1rt definition: organizing data, into spreadsheets and graphs, summarizing data (e. g. percentages, averages, interpreting data (i. e. making inferences, drawing conclusions) Descriptive statistics: are procedures used to summarize, organize, and simplify data. Examples are different kinds of percentages and averages. Can include number (of participants), age, gender, race/ethnicity etc. Research is usually conducted on specific groups of individuals (e. g. students, women, cancer survivors).
