PSY 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Statistical Inference, Statistic, Test Statistic
Document Summary
A hypothesis test is a method (paradigm) which uses sample data to evaluate a hypothesis about a population. They are done in the context of a research study. There are four main steps in a hypothesis test. Step 1: state the hypothesis (or hypotheses) Step 2: set the criteria for a decision. Step 3: collect data; compute sample statistics. Predict the expected characteristics of the sample based on the hypothesis. Obtain a random sample from the population. Compare the obtained sample data with the prediction made from the hypothesis. Chapter 8: intro to hypothesis testing // 03-12 october 2018 // page 1. The null hypothesis (h0) states that there is no change, no difference, or no relationship. In the context of an experiment, it states the independent variable has no effect on the dependent variable. The alternative hypothesis (h1) states that there is a change, difference, or relationship.
