Cinema = narrative? early cinema wasn"t really narrative (gunning"s argument) rather exhibitionism /showing us something. 1907 novelty of lm started to wear off - people didn"t just go anymore just to see cool new technology one solution to remedy this: try to give medium more credibility try stuff like adapting famous stories/plays. Narrative integration period 1907-13: how could cinema tell stories, but without just copying theater? (from plays, legends, etc) not just setting up camera and capturing scene. Italian lm (nero, or the fall of rome luiggi maggi 1909) beginning period of narrative integration. How is this more movie / less just theater? when nero dreams of the future of rome hallucination of burning of city of rome (great emperor) done with a special effect. > scope: of the drama , exterior shots (can"t do this in theater), vastly large sets in which the action could take place more like reality and less like a stage.
