LING 110g Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Voicelessness, Phoneme, Vocal Folds
Document Summary
Another common distinction in articulation is voicing: whether the vocal folds vibrate or not. /t/: the air flow first comes to a complete stop, followed by a small explosion. /f/ a little bit of air leakage throughout, resulting in an audible hissing. /t/ is a stop and /f/ is a fricative. Articulatory properties such as voiced, interdental, fricative, etc are called. So if /f/ and /v/ share two features (both are fricatives and labiodental) and differ in one feature (/f/ is [-voice] and /v/ is [+voice]) Phonological rules make reference to a feature or a combination of features. Do the quick excersies in the phonetics/phonology reading (slide 37 = directions) Aspirated consonant production (slide 37: as articulation of the voiceless consonant /p/ begings, the vocal folds are spread open not cuasting an vibration, the bilabial closure is released and the vowel articulation begins. Vocala folds are still wide open at the time of the release of the bilabial.
