Document Summary

Organic molecules: compounds containing carbon said to be organic; range from simple molecules (ex. Ch4) to colossal ones (ex. proteins)// carbon compounds, regardless of its origins. Major elements of life: c,h,o,n,s,p reflect the common evolutionary origin of all life. Carbon: the backbone of life; able to form only 4 bonds used to build an inexhaustible variety of organic molecules; allow great diversity of living organisms due to its unique chemical versatility. Chemical groups(functional groups): each has certain properties (shape&size) to cause in a characteristic way. Forms h-bond with water dissolve compounds like sugar. Compound name: alcohol (name + -ol ) ex) ethanol. Compound name: ketone (carbonyl group within a carbon skeleton)/ aldehyde (at the end of carbon skeleton) ex) acetone. Acts as an acid b/c covalent bond between oxygen and hydrogen = so polar. Compound name: carboxylic acid/ organic acid ex) acetic acid. Can pick up h+ from the surrounding solution (water, in living organisms)
