Body language: non-verbal communication, more truthful, speaker may not pay attention to body language when speaking. Eye contact is important: not having direct eye contact can make listener doubt what you are saying. It is okay to be silent: you don"t have to be a filler, you don"t always have to have the right words. If you feel like you are rambling, stop, take a breath, and collect your thoughts. Factors of ineffective communication: too much stress, exhaustion, loss of communication. Don"t be afraid to use praise for both children and parents. Modeling: kids, medical staff, modeling things that work. An assessment: information for assessment can come from: Building rapport: give kids a chance to warm up to you. Introductions to kids and parents: talk to parents, say you"re from child life, give a little insight to what child life is, talk to the child, find out a little bit about the child likes to do.
