PSY 364 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Metacognition, Disconnection, Cognitive Therapy
Document Summary
Module 22: cognitive change, part 1: types of cognition. Fundamental propositions of cbt (1) cognition affects emotion and behavior (2) cognition can be tracked and altered (measured as outcome - goal) Goes against skinner (can"t use internal behaviors to be able to do things) Measures have to be overt (not covert like cognition) (3) changing cognition potentiates/encourages changes in behavior. Can track more through neuroscience - information processing. Parts of brain constitute the thinking (3) function - purpose. Ex: rem sleep is important for maintaining the health for our neurocognition. Ex: trying to learn, enjoy, problem solve. etc. Distorted / disordered (it"s not accurate, isn"t working the way it"s supposed to work) Maladaptive (doesn"t get you where you want to go) Assessment of mental cognition - mental status exam to orient to what is happening with a client. Types of cognition (all have own developmental trajectories - change over age): Automatic thoughts - make up many maladaptive thoughts.
