Document Summary

3 population and global inequality: today"s social problems news. Couple may have 2 children if both are only children. Decreasing work force: population and global inequality. The number of people on this planet constitutes both a major problem and potential future calamity. The world population on october 31, 2011, reached an estimated 7. 0 billion, and at its current rate of growth, the net addition annually is 82. 9 million (the equivalent of adding the population of iran every year). Put another way, the world has almost 1 million more people every four days (adding 227,252 more people each day) all needing food, water, medicine, and homes for an average lifespan of 69 years (whitty 2010:34). And, each new additional human being encroaches on the earth"s environment, adding to the dangers of climate change, soil depletion, and limited fresh water. This is a consequence of differential fertility (differences in the average number of children born to a woman by social category).
