93 views1 pages

Document Summary

Somesthetic pathways- between neurons and brain: somatic vs visceral pain. Injured tissues release chemicals stimulate nociceptors trigger pain. Bradykinin- most potent, causes release of other chemicals, promotes healing. Convergence of projection pathways (different ways pain travels to the brain) is basis for referred pain . Referred pain- visceral (organ) pain that manifests superficially. Ex: heart attack triggers pain in shoulder or left arm. Major referred pain areas: liver and gallbladder: right neck/collarbone region, lung and diaphragm: left neck/collarbone region, heart-left chest/shouder/arm, kidney-lower abdomain, hip, upper thigh region.
